Tinashe Dube is 22, in his final year of a commerce degree at the University of Zimbabwe, and he hasn't asked his parents for money since March.
He didn't start a business. He didn't find a job. He started doing errands.
"My friend sent me a link to Graft and said there were people in Borrowdale and Avondale paying good money just to have someone pick up their groceries or collect their kids from school," Tinashe explains. "I thought he was pulling my leg."
He wasn't. Within 48 hours of creating his profile and getting verified, Tinashe had his first booking: collect dry-cleaning from two shops in Avondale, drop it at a house in Mount Pleasant. The fare: ZWG 35. It took him 45 minutes on his bicycle.
"I thought, this is actually real." He booked three more tasks that same week.
The key, Tinashe discovered, was consistency and communication. He responded to bookings within minutes, always sent a confirmation message when he was on his way, and once — when a grocery shop was out of stock — he called the client immediately rather than just substituting silently.
That call earned him a five-star review and a regular client. The family now books him every Tuesday and Thursday for their grocery run — standing orders, guaranteed income.
By month two, Tinashe had built a small repeat client base in the Borrowdale area: three families for weekly grocery runs, one professional who needed documents collected from town twice a week, and a mother who paid him to collect her children from school on days her driver was unavailable.
"I structure my schedule around my lectures," he says. "I don't take bookings before 2 PM on Monday and Wednesday. Everyone knows that. Clients book me because I'm reliable — my rating is 4.8 stars from 61 completed jobs."
His average weekly earnings now sit at $100–120 USD, with spikes during school holidays when families need more help. He's paid off his laptop — bought for university — entirely from Graft income.
The escrow system matters to him too, though perhaps differently to how it helps the clients. "I know I'll get paid. When I complete the task and the client confirms, the money lands in my Graft wallet. I've never been ghosted, never been told 'I'll send it later.' It's just there."
Tinashe graduates in December. His plan for 2027 is simple: expand to five errand workers under a small operation he'll manage, all listed under a shared Graft profile. "The demand is there. Harare is busy. People need help with small things — and I've shown it's a legitimate way to earn."
