Getting started
What is Graft?
Graft is a marketplace for getting work done in Zimbabwe. People who need something done post a task, and workers (we call them grafters) send offers with their price. You pick one, pay into escrow, and the money is released to the worker when the job is finished. Plumbing, electrical, cleaning, building, tutoring, design, mechanics and many more trades are on Graft.
Is Graft free to use?
Joining, posting a task, browsing, messaging and sending offers are all free. The only charge is a service fee on a job that goes ahead: 6% of the agreed price, paid by the client on top of it. A worker always receives the full price they quoted.
Do I need an account to look around?
No. You can browse open tasks, workers and services without signing in. You need a free account to post a task, send an offer, message someone or hire.
Can I both hire and work on Graft?
Yes, with one account. Anyone can post a task. To send offers on other people's tasks, tap "Start earning" and add your trades. Your hiring history stays where it was.
Which towns does Graft cover?
All of Zimbabwe. You can post a task in Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare, Gweru, Masvingo, Chinhoyi, Kadoma, Kwekwe, Zvishavane, Bindura, Marondera, Chegutu, Chiredzi, Gwanda, Kariba, Rusape, Victoria Falls, Hwange, Beitbridge, Gokwe or Nyanga. If your town is not listed, pick the nearest one and say where you are in the description. Remote work, like design or writing, can be done from anywhere.
Is there an app?
Yes, for Android. Download it here. It is quicker on slow connections, sends notifications for new offers and messages, and can be unlocked with your fingerprint. There is no iPhone app yet: on an iPhone, use the website in Safari and add it to your home screen.
Posting a task and hiring
How do I post a task?
Tap "Post a task". Say what you need done, pick the trade and your town, and add up to 4 photos and a budget if you like. Choose whether the work is in person or remote, and whether you want to pay online or in cash. It takes about two minutes and costs nothing. It goes on the jobs list straight away, where workers in that trade find it and send offers.
How long does my task stay open?
Until you hire someone, or until a closing date you choose. After 30 days we ask whether you still need it. If you do not answer within a week, the task closes so workers are not sending offers to nobody. You can reopen it or post it again at any time.
Can I change, pause or close my task?
Yes, from the task page. Edit changes the details. If you change the budget, place, dates or how you will pay, workers who already sent offers are told. Pause takes the task off the list and stops new offers, while you can still answer the offers you have. Close ends it, and everyone who sent an offer is told.
How do I choose the right worker?
Offers are sorted with the strongest first: workers you hired before and rated well, then featured and ID verified workers who do this trade, then by rating and jobs completed. Open a worker's profile to see their reviews, photos of past work and any confirmed qualifications. You can ask a question on the task before you decide, and you can sort offers by price instead.
Can I hire a particular worker directly?
Yes. Open their profile and send the task straight to them, or book one of the fixed-price services they offer. Only that worker sees it. If they do not take it, you can open the same task to everyone.
What do I need before I can accept an offer?
Your identity must be verified: a photo of your national ID or passport and a selfie, checked by our team, usually within a day. You can post a task and read offers while you wait. Verify your ID.
What happens after I accept an offer?
You go straight to payment. Pay within 24 hours to confirm the hire. If you do not, the hire is cancelled and your task reopens for other offers. Once you pay, the worker is told to go ahead, and both of you can follow progress on the job page: hired, paid, started, done, paid out.
Can I hire the same worker again?
Yes. On a finished job, tap "Hire again" with the worker's name, and the task is sent straight to them. "Post again" copies a task you posted before into a new one, so you do not have to type it out.
Payments, fees and escrow
How does paying work?
When you hire, you pay the agreed price plus the service fee into escrow. Escrow means Graft holds the money: the worker can see it is there, but it only reaches them when the job is done. US dollar jobs are paid with EcoCash, OneMoney, Visa or Mastercard. ZWG jobs are paid through Pesepay. You type your number or card on the payment page; Graft never sees your PIN or card number. How your money moves explains it step by step.
How much is the service fee?
6% of the agreed price, added on top and paid by the client. A $100 job costs you $106, and the worker receives the full $100. The price, the fee and the total are shown before you pay. The fee pays for escrow, payment processing, ID checks and dispute handling.
Why is the amount on the payment page a little higher?
The payment provider adds its own charge for EcoCash, OneMoney or a card, and shows it on the payment page before you confirm. That charge goes to the provider, not to Graft or the worker.
Can I pay the worker in cash?
Yes, on in-person jobs, and on jobs posted or offered as cash. The fee is lower, 2%, and is paid online before the work starts; the worker is then paid the agreed price by hand. Cash is outside escrow, so Graft cannot hold it, refund it or settle an argument about it. You are told this before you choose it.
When is the worker paid?
When you release the payment after checking the work. For an in-person job you also hold a short completion code: give it to the worker only when the job is finished, and they enter it to mark the job done. If the worker marks the job done and you neither release the payment nor raise a dispute within 72 hours, it is released automatically.
Can I cancel and get my money back?
You can cancel from the job page until the work is marked done. If you had not paid yet, nothing is charged and your task reopens. If you had paid, the job amount is refunded: straight away when you paid from your Graft wallet, otherwise our team sends it back to the account you paid from. Charges taken by the payment provider are not refundable. Cancelling a job you already paid for leaves an automatic 1 star rating from the worker on your profile, so agree changes with them first where you can.
I paid, but the job still says it is not paid.
Mobile money confirmations can take a few minutes. Do not pay a second time. Open the job again shortly; it updates by itself once the payment provider confirms. If it still says unpaid after 15 minutes, open a support ticket with the reference from your EcoCash message or card statement and we will trace it.
What currencies can I use?
US dollars and ZWG. You choose the currency when you post the task, and offers come in that currency. US dollar payments go through Payonify, and ZWG payments go through Pesepay.
Earning as a worker
How do I start earning?
Create a free account and tap "Start earning". Add the trades you do, a profile photo and some photos of your work, then send your ID for checking and add the EcoCash or InnBucks number you want to be paid on. You can then send offers on open tasks in your trades. Save a search to be told when new tasks match it, and look out for our round-up of new jobs every Monday.
What do I need before I can send an offer?
Two things: your ID sent for checking (it does not have to be approved yet), and a mobile money number to be paid on. Asking a question on a task needs neither.
Do I pay any fees?
No. Joining is free and the service fee is paid by the client on top of your price. If you quote $100, you receive $100.
How do I get paid?
When the client releases the payment, or it releases automatically, the money moves to your Graft wallet. For a US dollar job with an EcoCash number on your account, it is then sent to that number straight away. Otherwise you can withdraw from your wallet at any time from $1. InnBucks, bank and ZWG withdrawals are sent by our team rather than automatically, so they take longer. Double check your number: money sent to a wrong number you gave us cannot be recovered.
How do I win more jobs?
Reply quickly, and write a short note saying how you would do this job and when you can start. Price fairly for the work described. A complete profile with a clear photo, pictures of past work and confirmed qualifications ranks higher, and every good review helps. Clients see verified workers first.
What do I do once I am hired?
Wait until the job page shows it is paid, then tap "I've started the work" so the client knows. When you finish, tap "Mark as done". For an in-person job, ask the client for their completion code and enter it; you can request it from the job page. The client then releases the payment, or it releases automatically 72 hours later.
What if the client does not confirm the job?
Once you mark the job done, the payment is released automatically after 72 hours unless the client raises a dispute. If they do, you are told and can give your side with photos before our team decides.
How do I add my qualifications?
From your profile, add each certificate or licence with a photo of it and, if it has one, its renewal date. Our team checks it and it then shows on your profile, which raises your level. A licence past its renewal date stops counting until you add the renewed one.
Can I offer fixed-price services?
Yes. Add a service to your profile with what is included and the price, like "Geyser service, $40". Clients find it under Services and can book it directly.
Verification, reviews and disputes
Why do I need to verify my ID?
So everyone on Graft knows they are dealing with a real person. Clients must be verified before accepting an offer, and workers must send their ID before sending offers. A member of our team checks every ID and selfie by hand, usually within a day. Your documents are kept privately, are seen only by staff who check them, and are never shown to other users.
What does the verified badge mean?
That our team has checked the person's ID against their selfie. A higher level means we have also confirmed a trade qualification. It does not guarantee the quality of anyone's work, which is what reviews are for.
How do reviews work?
After a job, the client rates the work and the worker rates the client. A worker's rating comes only from clients' reviews of their work, with bigger jobs and experienced reviewers counting for more. Workers can reply to a review.
What if the work is not done properly?
Do not release the payment. Talk to the worker first; most problems are fixed that way. If it is not put right, raise a dispute from the job page, say what went wrong and add photos. The payment is frozen while the dispute is open, so nobody can touch it. The worker can give their side, our team reads the messages and evidence, and decides whether the money goes to the worker, back to you, or is split.
Someone is behaving badly. How do I report them?
Use Report on their profile, or open a support ticket with what happened. Reports are read by our team, and accounts that break the rules are suspended.
Messages and staying safe
Why can't I send my phone number?
Phone numbers, emails, WhatsApp links and addresses are blocked in tasks, offers, questions and messages. That keeps the deal on Graft, where the payment is protected and the conversation is on record if there is a dispute. When you hire, the job address is shared with your worker automatically.
Why was my message sent as a request?
Your first message to someone you have not worked with goes to them as a request. Once they reply, you can talk freely. People you have an offer, a question or a job with can always message you.
Can I send photos, files or my location?
Yes. You can send photos, PDF and Word files, and your current location in a conversation. Only you and the other person can open them. Send your location only to someone you have chosen to trust with it.
Someone asked me to pay outside Graft. What should I do?
Say no and report them. Money paid outside Graft has no escrow, no refund and no dispute cover, and asking for it breaks our rules. Graft staff will never ask for your PIN, password or a release code.
Your account
I forgot my password.
Reset it here. We email you a link to choose a new one. If the email does not arrive within a few minutes, check your spam or promotions folder.
Can I control the notifications I get?
Yes. In your settings you can switch each kind of notification on or off, separately for phone notifications and email.
Can I take a break from Graft?
Yes. On your profile, tap "Pause or delete my account" and choose Pause. Your profile is hidden, your open tasks and offers are closed, and we stop sending you notifications until you come back. Sign in to reactivate whenever you like. You cannot pause while a job is in progress or money is held on one.
How do I delete my account or download my data?
Both are on your profile. Your data lets you download a copy of everything we hold about you, or remove your ID documents and keep your account. "Pause or delete my account" deletes it. You cannot delete it during an active job or while money is waiting in your wallet, so finish or withdraw first. Payment records are kept as long as the law requires.
Featured listings
What is a boost?
A paid way to be seen first. You can feature a task you posted, or your worker profile, for 3, 5, 7 or 14 days. Featured listings show above the rest with a Featured badge. The price and end date are shown before you pay, and nothing renews by itself. More about boosts.
Can I get a refund on a boost?
Not once it is live, and a boost does not promise offers or hires. We refund or restore the days if you were charged and the boost never went live, if you were charged twice, or if we removed it by mistake. Open a support ticket with the payment reference.
Still need help?
Open a ticket and our team replies by email, usually within 24 hours. Support hours are Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm Harare time. Include any payment reference or job link; it saves a round trip.
